She prefers to wait on the report from the president’s commission.
The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Representative Jerry Nadler of New York, had proposed increasing the number of justices on the Supreme Court to 13—adding four.
But when asked if the House would be voting on the proposal, Speaker Pelosi said, “No. I have no plans to bring it to the floor.”
“I support the president’s commission to study such a proposal,” the Speaker said, adding that the House is busy working on infrastructure and other major legislation. “I don’t know that it is a good idea or a bad idea. I think it’s an idea that should be considered and I think the president is taking the right approach, to have a commission study such a thing. It’s a big step.”
Before she passed away, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said, “Nine seems to be a good number.” And she said that packing the court “would make the court look partisan. It would be that one side saying, ‘when we’re in power, we’re going to enlarge the number of judges so we would have more people who would vote the way we want them to.’”
Last week, Justice Stephen Breyer said expansion advocates should “think long and hard” about making that move. He felt that court-packing would further erode public trust in the nation’s judiciary.
